One show that I have wanted to see for years now has got to be The Play That Goes Wrong. The show is created by Mischief Theatre who are also the great minds behind Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About A Bank Robbery.
A Little About The Play That Goes Wrong
The Play That Goes Wrong is about an amateur theatre group called The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society who are putting on a 1920’s murder mystery play. As you can tell from the title everything does go wrong which can go wrong!
The show earnt itself a place in the heart of London’s West End in The Duchess Theatre from 2014 to present and has been on a UK Tour since 2017. Also in 2017, The Play That Goes Wrong reached New York’s Broadway.
My Thoughts on the Show
Where do I start?
Even before the show started, it was hilarious! I had heard that there were a few things which happened prior to the show, so to make sure to get to theatre beforehand, and I am so glad that we did.
As the audience were starting to find their seats, members of the ‘Technical Team’ (actors) were walking throughout the audience as well as the Director of The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, Chris Bean was thanking people for coming to see his show.
The show is through and through a comedy and something I have never personally experienced in the theatre. The comedy may not be for everyone as it is very slapstick, but I think it is something that most people would enjoy. It isn’t like traditional slapstick – like Faulty Towers or Monty Python. It was very cleverly executed with perfectly timed crashes, falls and accidents.
The cast was not the original West End cast, but that did not matter at all! The cast was FANTASTIC! They were all in time with each other, knew what everyone was doing and where they would be on the stage and you could tell that they are all having a great time playing their characters. Or should I say they are having a great time playing their characters; characters? Anyway, they were FAB!
Something I love in the theatre is when the 4th wall is broken with the audience. The cast of The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society actors and actresses are very aware that they are in an amateur production and try to rectify the props breaking or even knocking someone out on stage. In the case of The Play That Goes Wrong, the 4th wall is well and truly shattered into pieces, and it made the show hilarious as you felt part of the show.
My Overall Review and Rating
It is not a shock here, but I have given The Play That Goes Wrong a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is one of the best shows I have seen and I would love to go and watch their other shows – or even give this show another watch in the future.
I would 100% recommend this show to everyone of all ages to go and watch. I think it would be something all the family could enjoy.
Location – Birmingham Hippodrome, Hurst St, B5 4TB.

Top Tips – I sat at the end of the row (to the left) in Row C, Stalls, and I had a great view. For a show like this; I feel all seats will be great.
Another tip of mine would be to enter the theatre and find your seats at least 20 minutes ahead of the performance.
