Welcome to day 9 of the Christmas Blogger Q&A. Today’s Christmas Q&A is with Nicola from Daisy Grey.
I’m a 20 something girl from Manchester who has a serious passion for Travel, Fashion, my home city & of course Christmas! My blog is an unfiltered view on all of these passions. If you like a lifestyle blog with a northern sense of humor, then come visit me over at Daisy Grey!
Question 1 – What’s your Christmas tradition?
I’m in that strange part of life where I’m starting to choose my own traditions. I’ve been living away from the family home for a few years and I’ve started the think, what traditions do I want to start? There are 4 things, that I do every year, which are now my new traditions!
My annual pilgrimage to the Manchester Christmas markets, it is definitely one of my favourite traditions. It’s the best way to get Christmassy & festive!
Newbank Garden Centre, just outside Manchester, is known for its amazing Christmas displays! I will always spend an afternoon going through the decorations & enjoying everything that glitters.
I always watch Elf, whilst I decorate my Christmas tree! Let’s face it, Elf has everything you could want in a Christmas film. It’s feel good, happy & festive. The music is also perfect for background noise when you decorate your tree!
Every year I build a gingerbread house. Making & decorating the houses always make me feel festive & although I know that they are aimed at children, I still love doing it!
Question 2 – What is your favourite Christmas indulgence?
My main indulgence over Christmas is food! I love the party food in the supermarkets. I also love buying all the festive hot chocolates, tea’s and wines. But, my favourite thing to indulge in, is baking! The rest of year, I’m not exactly what you would call Mary Berry, but I always love baking in December. Whether its mince pies, ginger bread, candied oranges or cookies. It’s the perfect time of year for homemade treats. Plus, it makes your home smell amazing!
Question 3 – What is the best gift you have ever received?
If I’m being completely honest, my friends and family always buy me thoughtful gifts.
So it’s really hard to choose just one, but, I can think of a couple of Christmas presents, which I have received that I know I will always remember.
My boyfriend bought me a bracelet the first Christmas in our own home. It’s a rose gold chakra bracelet from my favourite jeweller, Daisy London, and I haven’t taken it off since. It’s perfect & was a complete surprise, it’s probably now my favourite piece of jewellery.
My mum has also given me the most amazing Christmas’s presents I have received. For a joint Christmas present a couple of years ago, my mum bought my boyfriend & I EasyJet flights to Milan! We were so blown away and thankful. Milan was one of the top cities on my ‘to see’ list. The next year, she surprised us again with flights to Venice. These are places we have always wanted to go, but thought they would out of our price range. It has given us some of the most amazing memories I have, which I will be forever thankful for!
Question 4 – Are you an early gift buyer or leave them to the last minute?
Buying Christmas presents is something I start early. I start picking things up in September & try to get everything done by November! Most people think I’m crazy, but I love doing it & have quite a big family! It also means that I have some pennies left in December for me to enjoy myself with!
Question 5 – Do you have a favourite shop to buy gifts?
I tried to pick only one, but there are 2 places I will always rely on for Christmas presents.
Boots – I can pretend I always go to posh shops, but I don’t. Everyone loves a bit of Soap & Glory and who doesn’t love getting three gifts for the price of two!
Not on the high street – ok, so this one isn’t actually a shop. But if you have ever visited this website you will understand why I love it so much! It offers unique gift ideas sold directly by the artists that create them. I’ve bought everything from artwork, personalised jewellery, engraved glasses to chilli sauce making kits. You can also select who you want to buy a gift for & your price limit (plenty are around £20-£30) They are my go-to site, when I’m struggling to think of ideas!
Question 6 – Is there something which you always wanted for Christmas but never got?
I was always the type of kid who would write a letter to Santa & I would ask how the reindeers were doing and see if he was ready for his big Christmas Eve trip, but wouldn’t get around to asking for anything. However, this year I did really want to get my hands on the Birchbox Beauty advent calendar, but they sold out too quickly!
Question 7 – What is the most thoughtful gift that you brought someone?
My boyfriend is one of the sweetest people, who rarely buys anything for himself. Before we got together, he didn’t really experience many things outside his comfort zone and never spent any money on just having fun. He has been obsessed with sharks with his whole life & whilst looking for shark themed presents for our first Christmas, I found out that you can pay to dive in the shark tank at Blue Planet aquarium! I got the voucher & surprised him. I’d never seen him so shocked & excited that I knew I had picked the perfect present.
Question 8 – If you could be in any Christmas movie, which one would you be in?
My Christmas movie collection is something I’m very proud of. I have the DVDs of nearly every Christmas film you can think of (this is what I had to do before Netflix, Amazon & YouTube) these films have been watched hundreds of time & I love every single one. But if I was to pick one film to be in, I’d have to say, The Grinch.
Although I love the classics, like Elf & Miracle on 34th street (who wouldn’t want to be in 1990’s Manhattan?) I think Whoville is still the ultimate festive place to be! The Grinch is not only a great Christmas story, it gives you all the feels. I also love the original book by Dr Seuss, it’s something that everyone can either read or watch. I’d love to try decorating my house with Martha May’s light gun, play with Jing Tinglers and eat roast who-beast!
Question 9 – What is your earliest Christmas memory?
My earliest memories of Christmas, are of my mum.
Every morning in December, when I was little, I would be called downstairs to eat my breakfast. My mum would already be downstairs getting everything ready, for our day at school. The house would be completely dark, except all the twinkling fairy lights. She would turn on all the lights; the tree, the windows, around the doorways and sometimes the staircase. I just remember it always looking so magical & festive every morning!
Question 10 – What makes Christmas special for you?
The run up to Christmas is what makes it special for me. Picking out my tree, un-wrapping my favourite baubles, wrapping presents, drinking hot chocolate in my Christmas mug & watching all my favourite festive films. All of this makes my Christmas special.
As an adult, Christmas isn’t as magical as when you’re a child but everyone, even strangers, seem happier & kinder in December.
What exciting things have you got planned for 2018?
I cannot believe 2017 is nearly over! It has been an amazing year, but, I already can’t wait for 2018. I have lots more beautiful places around Manchester to share, lots more recipes being planned & I have more city breaks planned too! I’ve had so much support and love from everyone over the past 12 months and I have loved working with amazing bloggers like Steph too. I hope you liked my Christmas post & hope you have a very Merry Christmas! X
